My parents are dead now, but when Elvis died; I went and visited my mom after her divorce living in Germany. I really enjoyed watching Mary Tyler Moore in German. Of course it was called Oh Mary. But no one has ever grovelled better than Ted Knight. The grovelling was so much better in German. Also when I met my mothers stepson, we went to an underground bar. And the bar man was telling me how many Germans laugh at Canadians, singing together , oh the can is there! Oh Canada! My parents never taught us kids German, but we heard them speak of us kids when they talk to their german friends. I now use a handheld translator to recuperate German sentences I still remember.

... oh! English has the word "forlorn", which is a cognate with "verloren". (English also has "lovelorn", but I don't know of any other "lorns".) I was checking the etymology of "forlorn", and it said this: "In the Mercian hymns, Latin perditionis is glossed by Old English forlorenisse." So "forlorn" used to mean "damned" the way "verloren" can. God I love cognates.

Interessant wie sich überhaupt nicht mit der Kritik auseinander gesetzt wird und man über die Hautaussage Mutmaßt. Nein, keine Sau interessiert es das der Protagonist schwarz ist, der Waffenhändler in Kapitel 3.4 eine Trasfrau mit dem Namen Magdalena und die Gruppe Freiheitskämpfer für Querenrechte in einem Diktatorischen System kämpfen. Es stört die Leute das es einem aufs Auge gedrückt wird und an allen Ecken und ende sie selbst irgendwie minderwertig dargestellt werden (z.B. als der Übergriffige und ansonsten unfähige weiße cis hetero Mann), während Menschen mit anderer Hautfarbe/Sexualität/usw. als die besseren Menschen dargestellt werden. Spiel waren eigentlich so konzeptioniert das deine Feinde die nervigen Selbstdarsteller waren die ständig darüber geredet haben das sie SOOOO besonderes sind... bevor man ihnen bewiesen hat das sie gar nicht so toll sind wie sie selbst glauben. Aber es scheint standart in dieser Debatten zu sein eher gegen Strohmänner zu schießen als sich wirklich mit der Kritik auseinander zu setzen... und dann so zu tun als wüsste man besser was genau das Problem der Leute daran ist als sie selber.

I recently recalled a couple of cognates that were almost gone in English when I was a kid in the 70s, and are extinct today except maybe in some dialects. - to smart: to hurt. I think I heard it occasionally in the 1970s, but if it is remembered at all today, it's because there used to be a cartoon horse with a gun who would shoot himself in the face and say "Ow, that smarts!" We were a primitive cartoon-making people. - to smack: to taste. For example, "this smacks of garlic". The last time I heard it was maybe 1985, when a talk show host commented, "this smacks of organized crime".

Hallo Katja, Ich glaube auf jedem Fall, dass es Lerntypen gibt. Sie sind aber nicht unbedingt von der Person abhängig, eher von der Umgebung. Ich habe eine Zeit schon in Deutschland verbracht und eine nicht unerhebliche Zahl von Menschen kennengelernt. Die deutsche Fähigkeit, alle Lamgweile zu verschlucken und ganz uninteressante Ansätze zu üben ist sehr bekannt, wenn nicht schon legendär. Schlamperei war hier immer ein unerträgliches Laster. Also meistens stimmt es: als ein Deutscher (Österreicher, Schweizer,…) was zu lernen anfängt, geht er mit vollem Wollen, die Vollkommenheit zu erreichen. Anders als Kulturen wo die Schwärmerei einen wichtigeren Ort besitzt. Ein serbischer Schriftsteller aus der 19er Jh sagte, dass die Deutschen wählen einen Beruf aus und bleiben bei ihm lebenslang, statt nach Gewinn zu jagen. Es gibt Ausnahmen natürlich. Heutzutage muss man flexibel sein. Und ich finde das nicht schlecht, denn Einseitigkeit in der Zeit von Verbindungen und Kulturtreffen ist dumm und schädlich. Aber was Du gesagt hast, wie du die Grammatik gerne lernst, und was ich sage, die Geduld die man dazu besitzen muss - das sollen wir alle ob deutsch oder nichr, als Exemplar zu sich nehmen. I only partly agree with Steve. I think there is a tendency of giving grammar too little importance in modern language learning. Knowing and practising verbs in the conjugated form is absolutely basic. Word order rules are quite crucial in German when it comes to correctness. If we don't give these aspects any importance, we are conforming with too little and don't feel the need to learn a language correctly. Of course, the communicative aim of making interaction work goes beyond making mistakes. So the criteria depend on the context. But this shouldn't imply missing out the goal of reaching grammatical correctness. By the way, Steve makes loads of mistakes when it comes to applying the right sentence structures. It seems that he doesn't care about speaking German correctly. It gives me the impression that he is perfectly ok with speaking German incorrectly as long as the other person understands his message. The importance of grammar is ,of course, relative but please don"make us believe that it's irrelevant for communication, Steve!

Als Deutschlehrer mache ich einen Unterschied zwischen Theorie und Praxis. Beim Sprechen kann man nichr lange über Artikel und Deklinationen nachdenken. Das ist dann trial and error. Natürlich ist es umso schöner, wenn man die Theorie richtig in die Praxis umsetzt. Aber die Grammatikaspekte sind ja sowieso ein wichtiger Bestandteil beim Spracherwerb. Das kann man im Unterricht oder beim Selbstlernen üben. Natürlich sollte das richtige Erlernen schon langfristig das Ziel sein.

Liebe Katja, ich möchte gerne fragen, ob die Sätze in Deiner Übung (14:19) korrekt sind. Die Aufgabe lautet: Setze die Sätze in den Konjunktiv II. der Vergangenheit. Warum ist dann die erste Hälfte des ersten Satzes nicht in der Vergangenheit? "Maria würde gern kommen" heißt doch Konjunktiv II. im Präsens, bzw. Futur. Ich denke, es sollte heißen: "Maria wäre gern gekommen," usw. weil die zweite Hälfte des Satzes im Konjunktiv II. der Vergangenheit ist. Genauso im dritten Satz denke ich, es sollte heißen: "Er hätte das nicht gemacht, wenn du es ihm erklärt hättest." Meine Frage zu Satz 4: ist er überhaupt im Konjunktiv II. der Vergangenheit, wenn dort nur "würde + kommen" benutzt wurde? Meine Frage zu Satz 5: sollte es nicht lieber so lauten?: "Er hätte nach Deutschland auswandern können, wenn er gewollt hätte." Ich freue mich auf eine Antwort.
